"I love you Dad!"

Today I was required to attend a District 99 Administrator Academy at an off-campus location. The meeting was from 8 AM - 4 PM. As I was eating a bowl of cereal this morning, I looked at our family calendar and saw "Miles Safety Town Graduation - 12:30 PM" on today's line-up. Miles has been in a program sponsored by the Park District and the DG Police this week, learning all about traffic signs, school bus safety, 9-1-1, 'stranger danger', etc.

As I was driving to the academy I realized that the building I was going to was only about a five minute drive from the park district where Miles would be having his 'ceremony.' It dawned on me that - if lunch happened to be from 12 - 1 PM, I might be able to get over to watch.

When I arrived at the academy, I found out lunch was going to end at 12:30 PM. Bummer. At the break I lamented this fact to my good friend Glenn who said, "So you'll be late getting back from lunch ... big deal." I was a little surprised that he so quickly suggested I should miss part of the "required" meeting. But Glenn said, "This is a big deal to Miles; you should be there."

So, I went. And Glenn was right ... the proof being what Miles called out as soon as he saw me sitting in the back row of the outdoor amphitheater. Loud enough that everyone present could hear him, he yelled ... "I love you Dad!" (Imagine now the collective "Ahhhhhhhh" from all the moms in attendance.)

I told Kristen tonight that it not only made me feel good about going ... but it also made me feel very glad that he's not shy about sharing his feelings. I think that's a good sign ...
