Independence Day

Our morning began with yummy coffee cake (thanks Amy, Mila & Emery), and some general "hanging out". By late morning we were heading out the door to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum.

The Reagan Library was a captivating and really exciting way to spend Independence Day. There was so much amazing American history encapsulated on the beautiful campus grounds, and we all thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

In addition to the permanent Reagan Library exhibits, there is currently an exhibit on the grounds dedicated to Lincoln. It was pretty inspiring to see one of the three original copies of the Emancipation Proclamation, signed by President Lincoln.

My experiences with our German Music Exchange over the past 20 years, which began shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall, has provided me many opportunities to learn and consider much of what the wall represented, from a variety of perspectives. Because of Reagan's pressure on the Soviet Union to tear down the wall, the Library - appropriately - had several exhibits that focused on the wall and all it represented. I was particularly drawn to the piece of the wall that was donated to the Reagan Library by Germany, and displayed as a sculpture in the outdoor garden. It was apparently placed here - overlooking the mountains - to symbolize 'freedom' ... and it felt especially poignant to see it today.

Late afternoon and evening included lots of 'Americana': kids playing in sprinklers, an amazing bar-b-q, and some great fireworks in Woodland Hills!
