You might imagine and appreciate that Emery is quite fond of the train's point of origin: Emeryville, CA.
As we sat at the station this morning, waiting for the train to arrive, I looked to my left and found this scene (pictured) to be comically ironic, given my proclivity for technology. My wife and two children were all using an iPad mini ... and I was the one holding and reading a paperback book. Of course I proceeded to add an additional layer of irony by then pulling out my own iDevice, and taking a picture of myself pretending to read a real book next to them. And then, as if the technology Gods were taunting and chiding me to make this absurd moment in time even more ridiculous, I totally obliterated my "Renaissance Man" moment by immediately posting the image on Facebook.
We boarded about 8:45 AM, I found Room #5, and I introduced myself to the space Miles and I will be calling home for the next three days and two nights. Kristen and Emery are across the hall in Room #6.
The majority of our day was spent enjoying time together as a family, alternating with moments of solitary reading. I think we all found a good balance.
This next picture was a happy accident. I was trying to photograph scenery outside the train, but when we suddenly passes a thick patch of trees, I caught Emery and Miles in the reflection of the glass.
The climb up and through the Sierra-Nevada Mountains today provided some of the most beautiful scenery we have seen in the past two weeks.
This is a shot of the American River near Tahoe, which was where Kristen and I white-water-rafted on our honeymoon.
By dinner time this evening we were in central Nevada, and the landscape had once again taken another beautifully dramatic turn.
Shortly after dinner, as the Zephyr raced away from the setting sun, it was a DIFFERENT member of the Teague family who I found interacting with real paper.
So of course I pulled out an iDevice and took a picture ...
