"You may now kiss the bride," is not anything I ever dreamed I'd be saying when I graduated with a degree in Music Education!
Last November, two of my former students - Katie Prudden and Keith Rhoades (Class of 2007) - asked me if I would officiate their wedding. I have known both families for about 15 years.  I not only taught Keith and Katie ... but their older siblings were both in the DGN Band. Keith and Katie first met in 5th grade beginning band, and music has been a common anchor point for years. Their initial hope was that I would consider ordination through the Universal Life Church so that I would have the legal credentials to sign the marriage certificate, etc. I considered it, but ultimately suggested to them that a "co-officiate" role might both honor their wish for my involvement, and also give them the opportunity to include a true ordained official of the church. A wonderful Episcopal priest I have known for a while - Andria Skornik - graciously agreed to co-officiate with me. She executed the moments of the liturgy that are "non-negotiables" for a priest (according to the Episcopal Church), and signed the marriage license. I did the opening and closing prayers, led Keith and Katie through the Declaration of Consent, and wrote/spoke the homily. In the end, the wedding was a beautiful launching pad for their marriage, but also a wonderful reunion of many DGN students ... most who had all met through their involvement in band. The Father of the Bride determined that there were no fewer than seven major college marching bands represented by those in attendance at the wedding.
Participating in Keith and Katie's wedding was a true honor for me.  It was certainly a testament to the power of music, as well as the important role that "teachers" play in all of our lives (this teacher included). I'll certainly never forget it.
