I suppose birthdays are - by their very nature - all about time. They provide an inherent opportunity to measure time, and in the process consider where we exist in the life/time continuum. For me, #46 provided several special/fun gifts that connected me to my past.
From Kristen ... I was thrilled (and totally surprised to open up a case of Salt Risin' Bread, directly from Danville, KY. (Thanks Mom for helping Kristen with the logistics of this order!) The smell and taste of this bread - toasted with butter - immediately transports me to my childhood and many memorable visits with my grandparents and extended family in Kentucky. Miles and I went through an entire loaf for breakfast this morning!
From my Father ... I was so grateful and honored to receive my grandfather Teague's gold Elgin pocket watch/chain. My father, who had the timepiece cleaned, oiled, and appraised, was able to determine that the watch was manufactured in 1911, making it 57 years older than me on my 46th birthday. In a week when the tech world is all a buzz about the new AppleWatch ... I have to say that I feel like I won the time-measurement lottery!
I was very blessed with wonderful birthday wishes from family and friends; each was meaningful and deeply appreciated.
