The morning was pretty lazy and consisted mostly of intense "Go Fish" card games.
Kristen, Miles, Emery and I decided to drive south down the coast toward Belfast. We had a wonderful lunch at Darby's Pub, followed by some window shopping in the very quaint downtown area.
After a visit to the local candy store, we spontaneously had the idea to see if we could find a lighthouse in the area to explore. So I typed in "lighthouse" to Google Maps on my phone. One of the flags that popped up on my screen was the Maine Lighthouse Museum in Rockland, ME, just 20 miles further south. "That's not far," we thought, so we were on our way.
Our drive took us through the beautiful bay-side community of Camden before reaching the museum in Rockland.
While exploring the Lighthouse Museum we learned that - no joke - August 7th is "National Lighthouse Day". So named by Congress to commemorate August 7, 1789, when Congress approved an Act for the establishment and support of lighthouse, beacons, buoys and public piers." I thought, "You've got to be kidding me! We stumbled upon this museum ... via Google Maps ... on National Lighthouse Day?! We better go visit some real lighthouses!"
So ... on the recommendation of the museum staff ... and with the continued assistance of Google Maps ... we were off to explore two lighthouses in the region.
We first turned our sights on the Owl's Head Lighthouse on the northern tip of Owl's Head Bay. The walk up to the point was a lot of fun, and we were rewarded with spectacular vistas.

Our second lighthouse to explore was completely different: the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse, which is located at a mile-long breakwater wall.
It really was a fun day, made better by the spontaneity of our decision making. Capping off a wonderful day was another fabulous dinner of fresh Maine lobster.
It's hard to believe (and a little sad to realize) that tomorrow will be our last full day in Maine, but I am very grateful for the experiences we have had.
