Sleeping in the "family bedroom" was a bit of an adventure. Miles & Emery were oblivious to the middle of the night stops and the bumps in the tracks that seemed to build intensity the further west we traveled into the night. Kristen and I on the other hand stirred quite a bit. Still, this is so much fun; I'm not complaining!
By 6 AM my body needed a stretch, and so I headed up to the observation car hoping to catch a Kansas sunrise with a hot cup of Joe. I wasn't disappointed.
Not only did I witness the sky ablaze with a fire-orange sunrise, Mother Nature provided me - on the opposite side of the car - an incredible show of lightning/rain that gradually surrendered to a rainbow in the distance. Breathtaking.
The Dining Car has become a family favorite. The food aboard Amtrak is good. Really good. Way-better-than-airline-food good. It's "I've probably already gained back the weight I worked hard to lose last week" good.
We have been through four states today and enjoyed a wide array of interesting vistas. We've all enjoyed seeing animals running and galloping in the wild and along side the train. And lots of card games. UNO was the new game today.
Today we also made our way to the very back of the train and discovered another great vantage point: the back door!
Shortly we will be disembarking in Williams, AZ and transferring to the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel for the night.
We bid the Southwest Chief good-bye for 48 hours. Thanks to the crew of this train, especially Richard, for getting our adventure off to a great start!
