DC Day 6: Living and Breathing History

Kristen and I decided over two years ago that we would target Summer 2015 for a family trip to D.C. It was a summer with no scheduled DGN Band tours and it seemed like Miles and Emery would be old enough to appreciate the sights while at the same time make connections to their learning in school. To have - by pure coincidence - landed in the Nation's Capitol in a week that has seen several significant rulings by the Supreme Court - was just dumb luck. I'll take it!

There was a lot of excitement and reaction (for and against) in D.C. yesterday to the court's ruling that mandates marriage equity in the United States. Far more important than how Kristen or I might feel about the ruling personally, we are both elated as parents that our children were able to stand shoulder to shoulder with celebrators and protestors on the steps of the Supreme Court and witness - as it unfolded - a historic moment in time.

On the way home from the Marine parade last night, Miles and I decided to exit the Metro one stop earlier than our hotel so that we could walk by the White House. What we came across has been well covered in the media today: the White House wasn't white, but rather awash with colors of the rainbow. As Miles and I mingled with others who had descended on Pennsylvania Avenue, I told him I had not seen anything quite like it - save maybe the night that my father and I had taken the train to Grant Park in Chicago to hear President Obama's election night acceptance speech. Similar to that night, the streets were filled with thousands of jubilant people sharing the moment.

I will have to paraphrase, but as Miles and I walked away from the White House and back to the hotel he said something to the effect of ...

"Dad, I think June 26, 2015 is going to be one of those dates that kids are going to learn about and read about in history books ..."

Living history. Awesome.
