Our final day in D.C. included a trip to the top of the Washington Monument, and a visit to the National Cathedral.
We all enjoyed the views afforded us by the Washington Monument; Kristen didn't enjoy the slight rocking motion we could feel on a windy/rainy day! Miles enjoyed seeing the original capstone, including the "Laus Deo" inscription, which was one of the major clues we read about in Dan Brown's "Lost Symbol."
At the National Cathedral we all took the audio tour, which was wonderfully informative. I had not realized that Martin Luther King, Jr. preaches his final sermon here just four days before his tragic assassination. I was mesmerized by the audio clips I heard of that sermon today, and struck by the timelessness of his teachings in light of the Charleston mass shooting just days ago.
And related to Charleston and the national response that tragedy has created, the Cathedral now finds itself in the national media spotlight this weekend; tomorrow morning the Dean of the Cathedral is expected to suggest/recommend the removal of a small portion of one of the windows that contains the Confederate Flag.
