I have really enjoyed following the World Cup this year. My increased interest has no doubt been - in part - due to my friendship with Reimund Schiffer (music teacher in Germany). It has been great fun to communicate with Reimund via email and Skype to hear his perspective on the games in his home country. Of particular interest to me has been to hear Reimund talk of the way in which the games have brought the people of his country together this summer. He describes a new pride in German nationalism.

Perspective by UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan
While millions of people all over the globe follow the World Cup this weekend, I'll be continuing to wonder why our country seems to be so isolated and "United States-centric" when it comes to this sporting event. Sadly, not so different from our recent foreign policy.
I'll be cheering for Germany today as they play Portugal for the 3rd place.
Update: Final score ... Germany 3 - Portual 1. Congratulations Reminud!
