One of the things I love about being a parent is being suddenly caught off-guard by some random comment that one of my children makes. This one - tonight - is a good example:
While watching TV as a family, a commercial comes on for the new Schick Hydro razor. I make a somewhat sarcastic comment to Kristen that I am continually amazed how the shaving industry remakes itself year after year by claiming they have invented bigger-better-stronger-thinner razors.
Me: "Obviously I'm missing out since I don't use the Schick Hydro."
Miles, who is just sitting in the corner of the couch, minding his own business, says very matter-of-fact: "Dad, the best razor is the Fusion Pro Glide Power Razor. It uses the thinnest blades, and it has less tug and pull."
What?! Are you kidding me?! He's eight years old! I don't let him watch THAT much television! He's not going to shave for another five years ... but he's already planning what kind of razor to buy????
"We might not have it all together, but together we have it all!" An electronic journal of our ongoing escapades ...

Cooking

Emery is really enjoying helping in the kitchen. This morning, while Kristen was exercising, Emery and I made pancakes together. She did almost everything (that didn't include fire) by herself, including getting out all the supplies, and putting them away when we were finished. When I asked her, "So how did you become such a great cook at such a young age?" she responded with ...
"Because I have such a great mommy at such a young age!"
Amen.
Old as Dinosaurs

This morning at breakfast Emery asked me, very seriously ...
"Daddy, when you were a little boy were dinosaurs still living?
I almost said yes.

I can see (nothing) for miles, and miles ...
We made it to Salina, KS just in time for the All-Star Game. St. Louis looks great on television, and we're all excited to go to Busch Stadium this weekend. Our friend Mike Kinman, and his son Schroedter, are at the game. We've traded some text messages, and they are having a great time.
The contrast in vistas today was striking. That's all I'll say about that. The change in temperature has been striking too.
Before I forget, I want to jot down some memorable quotes from the trip so far:
=====================================
Miles: "It's not very healthy in Nebraska. Trees make you healthy, so Nebraska isn't very healthy." - Miles
=====================================
Emery: "Do the people in Nebraska talk like us?"
Miles: "Ya, ya ... They speak English in Nebraska."
=====================================
Emery (while watching the aspen trees speed by her in the car window): "It looks like milk was spilled on the trees!"
=====================================
And this, during a conversation today in the car, about things that make us happy. This really made us laugh ...
Me: "Kids, you know the three happiest days of my life, don't you?"
Kids: "No."
Me: "I'll give you one, and you see if you can come up with the other two. One was the day I married your mother. Now ... can you guess the other two?"
Kids: "No."
Me: "Okay, I'll give you a second one: the day Emery was born. Can you guess the other?"
Emery: "When we went up on the ski lift at Crested Butte?!"

"I'm so tired I could sleep on a horse!"

Yesterday, while we were waiting for our dinner at Pizano's Pizza, the kids were very hungry and beginning to show signs of impatience. Kristen, who was also hungry, used the phrase, "I'm so hungry I could eat a horse!"
Toward the end of the meal, while waiting for the check to arrive, Emery began to get sleepy. First a yawn ... and then she offered - fully expecting to be taken seriously, "I'm so tired I could sleep on a horse!"
At least she didn't say "with a horse."
